AMI Primary Training Course
The AMI Primary Training Course prepares the student to be a Montessori teacher for children between the ages of three to six. Montessori schools are widespread throughout many parts of the United States, with concentrations in urban areas. The AMI diploma prepares one to teach anywhere in the world, subject to language and local regulations.
The AMI Primary Training Course subscribes to the principles, policies, standards and requirements of AMI. Lectures present theory of child development and Montessori pedagogy. Demonstrations of Montessori materials lessons provide the student with basic pedagogical “tools of trade.” The pedagogical model is one of apprenticeship and mentorship. Montessori materials are presented as though a child of three to six years were present to receive the lesson. Daily practice sessions in the prepared environment (classroom) provide the experience which helps to fashion the future teacher’s understanding, skill set, and confidence.
During the academic year following the first summer of training, trainees will observe children in established classrooms administered by a teacher who holds the AMI Primary diploma. Ninety hours of directed observation and 80 hours of practice teaching are required, and must be documented by the trainee. Following the second summer of training, trainees will go back into the classroom and satisfy their practice teaching requirements under the supervision of a teacher who holds an AMI Primary diploma. Examinations are held in the third summer.
Loyola University Maryland’s partnership with the Houston Montessori Institute provides students with the opportunity to complete a Master of Education (MEd) degree in Montessori Studies in conjunction with their AMI diploma.
A fully trained and certified teacher will possess the skills necessary for employment as a teacher (or guide) of an AMI Primary class for children ages 3 to 6 anywhere in the world and, de facto, in any Montessori school. Montessori schools are located in all metropolitan areas as well as small towns.
At the Houston Montessori Institute (HMI), we are committed to keeping current trainees informed of job opportunities. Trainees will have access to a file of updated employment opportunities kept on site at the training facility. Current job opportunities are published on the websites of AMI/USA and the North American Montessori Teachers' Association (NAMTA). HMI helps to facilitate placement whenever possible, but HMI is not responsible for student employment.
Three summer format
July 1 to August 9, 2019 (6 weeks)

June 10 to July 29, 2020 (7 weeks)
Fall session: 25 hours
Spring session: 1 week
June 9 to July 14, 2021 (5.5 weeks)
July 12: Week of oral exams
9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Lectures and presentations of lessons
AMI Diploma Requirements
AMI requires the following accomplishments in order to confer the Primary Diploma:
90% attendance in lectures and all other course activities
Submission of acceptable and original Albums in all prescribed areas
Submission of acceptable Material Making Assignments
Directed observations in AMI classrooms (90 hours)
Practice teaching in AMI classrooms (120 hours)
Marks of 50% or higher on examinations
Paper A: 3-hour written examination on theory topics
Paper B: 3-hour written examination on practical topics
Oral examination: 4-part, 2-hour examination conducted by an external examiner appointed by AMI, assisted by national examiners who are invited by the director of training
